Well...You Know

So only about, what, 9 months between posts. Not bad, right?

Well here I am, back again to underwhelm and disappoint with my tales of woe and injury.  At least, that's what the testosterone fueled, excitable and immature young adult version of myself would say. The mature, injured and somewhat refined man that sits here typing on this ergonomic keyboard feels very different.

The truth is that I am injured, pretty badly. I have a minimum of two hernias, at least as of my last MRI/X-Ray which went down about 16 months ago. I also have diastasis, which is essentially a tear in my abdominal wall that probably won't go away. Aside from that, I still battle with problems in my surgically repaired left knee which has very little cartilage left, arthritis in both hands and a little tear in my left Achilles tendon that flares up once I put in too much cardio. Fortunately, the worst of my problems, my stiff, nearly straight neck with precious little space between discs, is the least painful of all!

Why am I unloading this doctor's dream on you? Well, for starters it is good for me to write this stuff down. Sometimes when I'm in the gym and I get in a rhythm I forget that I'm falling apart in a number of ways. Not to say I'm infirm or even terribly impaired, but the days of the 700-800 pound rack pulls and 1500 pounds plus leg presses might be over. And honestly, that's for the best. The last several years my life has revolved around training for strongman and powerlifting contests, that I ultimately had to bow out of due to injury. I've had a handful of very painful heartbreaks that brought my life, not just my gym life, to a standstill. I wrapped up a LOT of energy in training for those events, only to have all of that essentially go to waste, while I lay up with something wrapped up while my daily routine has to be rewritten.

Instead, I have not really devoted myself to school where I am verrrrry close to getting my degree in Art History. As far as workouts are concerned, since removing myself from the strongman/powerlifting mindset, I've become more concerned with functional fitness and the philosophy behind it. Anatomy and the geometry of the human body are now things I seek to explore and in the process, try to get my weight down which ballooned during years of heavy training.

I'm working out more often now than ever! I'm down a few pounds and have broken my golden rule TWO TIMES and now have two workout partners that join me three to four times a week. Jared, a really old friend, moved back here from New York and is trying to get stronger and eventually get back into martial arts training. And KT, who is a transgender male that, up until now, has only done cardio and boxing training. Finding workouts that can be easily adapted for the lot of us, as well as helping them learn about some basic principles, has become a positive thing for me, not an annoyance as it has been in the past.

So that's what I'm up to now. Definitely going to be more active on the blog now that I'm in a better headspace. For the few of you that are still around, I'm very glad, and if I can help anyone in any way, I am very glad to do it-just drop me a line!
